My Father moved to the United States in his early 20’s and became a citizen about 30 years later. I was born in the United States, 1st generation along with my older brother. We were both born with Swedish and United States citizenship and at the age of 22 we each renewed our Swedish citizenship for life. Most of my Father’s family still resides in Sweden and both sides cross the Atlantic to see each other. Every time without fail my grandmother has had warm home-made bread waiting for us when we would arrive. Most of my Swedish family speaks English with the exception of my grandmother. Neither my brother or I are fluent in Swedish, thus making conversations with my her mostly non-verbal; communicating through smiles, hugs, and with a little help from my Father.

We had our own language.
